这个词是上次去Boston的途中和老板聊天的时候听他说的。具体的语境是一个很好玩的关于火枪的故事。老板说他有一把别人送的老式火枪，是那种要自己装填弹药的。他有一次想试试这把火枪，结果由于火药装填的太多，威力过猛，把站在他旁边的一位大胡子朋友的胡子都点燃了。这个故事惹得我们车里的人都哈哈大笑，我还记得追问过让他具体描述一下这个slang的意思，他说是形容某件事发生得很快，而且只发生一次，然后一下子就结束消亡了，主要是形容好的事物。我一下子想到了成语“昙花一现”，感觉很贴切，可惜无法和他用中文验证。呵呵。问同行的一个美国女生，居然没听过这个短语，看来并不是什么特别流行的词。

查了一下辞典： Freedictionary 上面的解释是“something that happens only once or for a short time and will not be repeated.” 和老板的解释差不多。Answers 的解释则意思要引申的丰富些： “An effort or person that promises great success but fails.” 看来和”昙花一现”基本上差不多意思。比如有个例句： “We had high hopes for the new director, but she was a flash in the pan.” 表明某件事物看上去似乎可以成功，但事实上只是昙花一现，很快就证明是个失败。有意思的是上面关于这个词语的来源，基本上和我老板的故事相吻合：
